Note: these reviews are of the Bullet Corp 147gr flat point bullets.
So I finally had a busy shooting weekend. In the past few months I have not had the chance to get to the range as much as I would like. This past weekend I had an excellent opportunity to test these bullets and even some Olight products.
I got behind my old trustworthy Loadmaster and had a thought…why am I running my Shadow so hot?
My average velocity on this gun was 950ft/s, a good 100ft/s more than what I needed. Yes I do load this high so that the ammo will factor out of a Sig SP2022 as well, but I already had enough ammo for the Sig…and there I went and dropped down 1 disc volume on the Lee Auto Disk.
This load is almost perfect for the longer barreled Shadow, 900ft/s with the Bullet Corp 147gr bullet.
I loaded up 300 rounds for the weekend….
So first up was the PSD night shoot on Saturday night at Rooikraal. I promised I would do this shoot and bring along some Olight products so the shooters could test them…It was a cold evening on the range!
PSD is a self-defense based “sport” so I shot this match with my normal EDC setup. So the Shadow stayed in the safe and my EDC gun was used. This is the shorter barreled Sig SP2022 and with this load the muzzle velocity is only 830ft/s…a bit low for sport shooting. One of the reasons I shot the match with these bullets was to see how smoke from the barrel would affect your vision.
All went great except that I had a few tumbling bullets…more on this later.
Sunday morning we were off to the annual SADPA Witbank League match. Even though I was out late on Saturday I dare not miss this match. It is a highlight of my shooting year. The boys and gals from Witbank always put up an entertaining match.
Historically it is always very cold in Witbank when this match happens but not even this can keep me away from showing up. Glad to say that Sunday was the hottest day I have experienced in Witbank…still cold but much better than previous outings!
It was a great match, fast shooting with a lot of movement…just how I like it. I have not shot much this year nor had time for any preparation for Sunday but I ended up not doing too bad. My accuracy impressed me but I was slow out of the blocks…one stage you had to stage your gun and mags and it felt like I took hours to stow my mags! All in all a great shooting day in Witbank.
Back to the bullets and tumbling…
The bullets only tumbled when shot with the shorter barreled Sig’s. Shot through the Shadow and all was great…no tumbling. All the barrels were inspected and no leading was found. This is great, leading could cause problems. But the tumblers worried me…
I spoke to a few casters at the Witbank match. As I stated previously this casting business is a dark and mysterious art. Everyone had their own opinion but the one constant was the low muzzle velocity…
This week I had a chat to another caster, a shooter who has represented South Africa in pistol shooting and only uses his own cast bullets. After discussing the matter for a good hour on the phone we both came to the same conclusion…the load for the Sig will need to be upped to over 850ft/s.
And my load data confirms this. When the average muzzle velocity was 880ft/s the bullets flew straight and true.
So time to set the Lee Auto Disc back to the higher volume.
It worked, why did I go and change it?...Us reloaders sometimes…
So far these bullets perform well for me and my needs. I am quite happy to reload these for practice and matches. I will be loading these only for the rest of the year, I have a big match coming up and preparation for this and the match will mean a lot of bullets being shot downrange…I will keep you posted.
Now a warning! If you do decide to give Bullet Corp a try, redo your load development. Start low and work your way up till everything works for you. Do not just go change the bullet and think everything will be fine.
As I always say; there are no shortcuts in reloading!
Will watch for your longer term report. Keen to try these.
What do they size the 9mm bullet at?
These are sized to .356
