I have had quite a few of these
presses in here for repairs over the years and 80% of the time this is the
cause…
Can you see the problems?
Problem no 1…the Zero Adjustment
Screw (TR2139) is installed incorrectly.
The Zero Adjust Screw should be on
the inside of the carrier. You will notice a recess in the carrier for the
Screw head.
With the screw on the outside it
will lose contact with the Ratchet Gear (TR2432) and result in your Pro1000 not
keeping the timing. If your press does not time correctly you will have priming
issues. Remember the Pro1000 primes at the bottom of the stroke, if the shell
plate is not aligned you can crush or tip primers.
Make sure that the Zero Adjust Screw
is installed correctly.
Problem no 2…the Case Sensor Clip
(TR2549) is also installed incorrectly.
The straight leg of the Case Sensor
Clip should fit into the slot and the curved section fits around the primer pin
area. The top part engages the Case Sensor Clip.
If this is installed incorrectly
your primer pin will not reset causing either primers not to feed on the pin or
primers feeding when a case is not present, this will cause that primer to get
stuck under the shell plate and seize your press.
Onto the next problem…
Problem no 3…the Case Sensor
(TR2548) is not installed correctly. Notice that the Sensor Bushing (TR2550) is
installed with the Tension Finger (TR2443) around it? This will cause the Case
Sensor to bind and not activate the Case Sensor Clip…leading to the same
problem as above, no primer feeding or continually feeding.
This is how it should be installed:
1. Install the Tension Finger on the
carrier, round part around the protruding pin, straight part in the gap and
must be against the shell plate.
2 and 3. Install the Sensor Bush in
the Case Sensor from the bottom. The head of the Sensor Bush sits on the
bottom.
4. Fit the Sensor Screw (FT1940)
through the Case Sensor, Sensor Bushing and Tension Finger and into the
carrier. Tighten but note that the Case Sensor should be moving freely.
See Problem no 2 and ensure that the
Case Sensor Clip engages the Case Sensor.
Also make sure that your Priming Pin
is installed with the short end down and the Primer Spring is installed on the
long end to the top.
Also note…
Case Sensors do wear out and needs
replacing…you will note that the plastic loses its strength and does not fully
engage the Case Sensor Clip.
Tension Fingers also wear out and
need to be replaced as soon as they do not securely hold the case in the Shell
Plate.
Ratchet Gears do wear out, the Zero
Adjust Screw will wear them out over time. Inspect the gear when you service
your press.
Hex Ratchets (90108) also wear out,
they start slipping on the Index Rod. When fitting them it should be a tight
fit on the Index Rod.
One more tip…
The Pro1000 primes at the bottom of
the stroke… Make sure that you complete the down stroke all the way to correctly
seat your primer! Failing to do this will lead to primers sitting high that
could seize the shell plate…and will lead to firing issues down the line.
I do encounter other problems that
are mostly caused by users not reading the instructions. I will post further
articles here in due course.
I hope this helps.

This is really nice, thank you Duane

Thanks Duane, I must admit your instructions and tips are the best out there!

Hi Duane
The blog is insightful. I have been offered an older model pro1000. For free. The current owner says he has replaced everything and it still won't function. I'm going to give it a go and see what is going on with it. If I need parts would I be able to order from you? Also have you got any advise on what I should look for on the press?
Kind regards
Justin

Hi Justin, yes we stock most of the parts and can get the rest.
Check the following before buying a second hand one:
Handle - Old Ball handles are not manufactured anymore, if it breaks you need to replace the whole linkage. Also check if the press has shoulder bolts and not roll pins...this is where the handle connects. Those bolts are not made anymore and if you have the roll pins you can't replace them - unless you engineer something.

Lucky fish!
Duane is the man when it comes to Lee - you are in good hands.
Duane - those bench mounted hand primers that was on backorder?
